Enlarge for print: a picture for a banner and a photo area

«Enlarge for print» enlarges a visualization, a sketch, a picture from the project's documents or the source of a «Printing» layout to a print size in centimetres: AI enlarges the picture 4 or 2 times and draws in the details, and the TIFF or JPEG file already carries the dpi you need for wide-format print. What you get and what it costs is shown before the start, and the charge is returned if something fails.

How to enlarge a picture for print

  1. Open the picture you are going to print and press «Enlarge for print»: on the page of a visualization it is an item of the «Download» menu (on a phone «More»), for a sketch on the board a button in the right panel, for a picture in the project's documents a button in the file's row, in «Printing» a button in the «Effective resolution» card. Where else to find it is in the section «Where you can enlarge from».
  2. In the window pick a «Ready size»: «Banner 3 × 1 m», «Press wall 3 × 2 m», «Photo area 3 × 2.5 m», «Central panel 2 × 2.5 m», or type «Width, cm» and «Height, cm» yourself. For a «Printing» layout the size with the bleed and the resolution are already filled in.
  3. Choose the «Print resolution» (72, 100, 120 or 150 dpi, ask the print shop) and the «File format»: TIFF or JPEG.
  4. The «What you get» block shows at once the size of the file in pixels, the AI steps, how many dpi you get at this size and what is trimmed if the proportions differ. Below are the price and the total.
  5. Press «Enlarge». The bar shows how much is done; a large file takes up to 10–20 minutes. You can close the window: the enlargement goes on, and the next time you open it for the same picture the file is in «Ready files».
  6. When the file is ready, press «Download file». «Another size» takes you back to the parameters to make one more file.

Where you can enlarge from

  • A visualization: on the page of a finished visualization «Download» → «Enlarge for print», on a phone «More» → «Enlarge for print». The selected variant is enlarged once it is ready and not being refined.
  • A hand sketch: select the sketch on the project's board, and in the right panel, in the «Sketch» section, press «Enlarge for print».
  • Your own picture: in the «Section documents» of a project (for example in «Budget» or «General documents») a JPG, PNG, WebP or TIFF file up to 60 MB has an «Enlarge for print» button.
  • A «Printing» layout: when the «Effective resolution» card lacks dpi, there is «Enlarge for print» next to «Request the original». The ready file also goes to the project's documents, in the «Printing» section: press «Replace the source» and choose it.
  • The owner and the editors of the project start it, outside a project the author of the visualization. A viewer of the project does not see the button. The run and the file belong to whoever enlarged: colleagues see only their own.

Size and resolution

  • The print size is from 10 to 2000 cm on each side. This is the size of the finished piece; for a «Printing» layout AURA adds the bleed itself.
  • The print resolution is 72–150 dpi, take the exact one from the print shop: a banner or a press wall seen from afar usually needs 72–100 dpi, a photo area where people take pictures up close is better at 120–150 dpi. The default is 100 dpi.
  • The picture keeps its proportions and covers the whole print size. If the proportions of the picture and the print differ, the window warns which edges will be trimmed: left and right or top and bottom.
  • TIFF is saved with lossless LZW compression, what most print shops expect. JPEG at quality 95 is smaller, the difference in print is hardly visible. Both files carry the dpi and the sRGB colour profile.

How AURA enlarges the picture

  • AI (ESRGAN) enlarges the picture 4 times while more than twice is missing, otherwise 2 times, at most two steps. A large picture is enlarged in overlapping parts, no seams show. AURA brings it to the exact size without AI.
  • If less than a quarter is missing to the size, no AI is needed: AURA fits the size itself, and it is free.
  • A file is never over 16,000 px on the long side or over 16 times the source: beyond that no detail is added. Then the window says honestly how many dpi you get at the chosen size and what size the needed dpi is enough for.
  • If the source is already enough for this size, the window says so: «The source is already enough for this size: no need to enlarge it».
  • AI draws in textures but does not know what was really there: check small text, logos and thin lines before printing. A real larger original is still better, if there is one.

Price and refund

  • The price is 1 pendant for every started 10 megapixels of the result at the default price. Below the parameters you see the price for 10 megapixels and the «Total» for this file, before the start.
  • In a project the project's owner pays from their wallet. An editor sees the price but not the owner's balance; if the owner is short of funds, the window says so.
  • If the price changed between showing it and the start, AURA charges nothing and asks you to check the price. Pressing again after a lost connection is not paid a second time.
  • If the enlargement fails, the charge is returned by itself. The same file from the same picture with the same parameters is given at once and for free.
  • One person starts at most 10 enlargements a day.

Enlarging the source of a «Printing» layout

  • In «Printing» the «Enlarge for print» button appears in the «Effective resolution» card when the dpi is not enough. The window already has the layout's size with the bleed and its target resolution.
  • You can download the ready file at once, and it also goes to the project's documents, in the «Printing» section. To have the layout use it, press «Replace the source» and choose this file: the effective resolution is recalculated.
  • If the project already has 300 files or is out of space, the file does not go to the documents, but you can still download it.

How this differs from «For print, twice as large»

  • «For print, twice as large» in the «Download» menu of a visualization gives the frame exactly twice as large for free. There is no size in centimetres or dpi there.
  • «Enlarge for print» makes a file for a particular print size and dpi, up to 16,000 px, from a visualization, a sketch, your own picture or a layout's source. It is paid, the price is shown before the start.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why is the «Enlarge» button inactive? The window says why: the size is out of range, the source is already enough, the owner is short of funds, the enlargements for today are used up or the service is temporarily unavailable.
  • Where is the file if I closed the window? Open «Enlarge for print» for the same picture: a running enlargement shows by itself, and the ready files are in «Ready files».
  • Can I enlarge a finished TIFF for the print shop? A picture over 60 MB or 50 megapixels is already a large original, it does not need enlarging.
  • Who sees my file? Only you: the file is kept private and downloaded by a short link. For a layout it also goes to the project's documents, which the owner and the editors see.
